Citywide PTO Alliance Sponsors School Committee Candidate Forum - Wed Oct 10

At 7pm on Wednesday, October 10, Medford's Citywide PTO Alliance will sponsor a public forum in the McGlynn School auditorium, located on Freedom Way in Medford.

The purpose of the forum is to enable the parents and guardians of Medford’s public school students to educate themselves about the candidates running for office this November.

Questions posed of the candidates will be drawn primarily from questions submitted to the Citywide PTO Alliance by members of the general public.  You're invited to e-mail your questions to dalebryan@comcast.net or denipark@comcast.net.

UPDATE:  read a report on this event at InsideMedford.com.

Candidate Questionnaires Complete

This morning, the Vote Medford team finished three candidate questionnaires - School Committee, City Council, and Mayoral - and transmitted them to the candidates

These questionnaires were formed from hundreds of questions submitted by citizens and members of nearly forty different community groups. Twenty local organizations served as formal advisors and consulted on question development.

Like 2005, the responses to the questionnaire will be posted verbatim on www.votemedford.org. Candidate responses are due no later than Tuesday, October 1, 2007 by 5pm.

We will contact the candidates shortly to schedule a time for a TV interview, which will air on TV3 and for the first time this year, will also appear on our website.

Calling Citizens of Medford

Water bills, school cuts, Green Line, parking, senior services, sidewalks, traffic, revitalization...  There are a lot of concerns facing Medford, and a lot of candidates for city offices this year. Through Vote Medford 2007 you'll be able to hear directly from every candidate about what they want to do for the city.

Vote Medford 2007 is asking all Medford residents to submit questions for the candidates.

Together with an advisory group of community organizations, we will create a questionnaire that will go to every candidate for city office.  We'll post their answers here, unedited, so you can make up your own mind about who you want to lead the city.   We'll also air video interviews through the website and TV3, and hold public forums so everyone in Medford has a chance to learn where candidates stand on the issues.

Whether you are an old timer or newcomer, whether you want big change or no change, now's your chance.  What do you want to ask the candidates?  Submit your questions here, or at a drop box at the Danish Pastry House on Boston Avenue or the Thursday Farmer's Market in Medford Square. Ask as many questions as you'd like, as long as it's before the August 25 deadline.

Vote Medford is a citizen-driven, non-partisan, unaffiliated voter-education project.   In 2005, thousands of Medford residents got information on the candidates through our questionnaire and videos.   This election season we've invited over 70 organizations to join our advisory group to ensure each questionnaire represents a broad range of concerns from across the city.  We're also expanding our website, and adding two new candidate forums this fall.

100% of the people in Medford want a great city.

99.9% of us complain about what's wrong with the city.

So why do only 25% of us bother to vote?

Don't let lack of information keep you in the silent 75%!  Submit your questions, read the candidates' responses, and make up your own mind!

Here's the information.  Go vote.

Advisor letters sent

Friday night, June 29, Jimk sent out  70+ letters to organizations inviting them to be advisors to VM2007.  Each envelope contained a letter with a swanky VM2007 graphic on top and a second page with a list of all the organizations we are contacting.

On the back side, a copy of the Boston Globe article written in 2005 on VM that year.  It all looks great.  Thanks for the team effort.  One task off the list.

Vote Medford 2007?

Vote Medford is an independent, citizen-led initiative whose goal is to help voters learn how the candidates for Medford municipal offices view our city and issues important to it. We see our role as helping to encourage public discourse on local issues.  Our membership is collaborative, composed of Medford citizens outside of political party machinery.

In 2005, we put together citizen-driven candidate questionnaire and access TV show that was well-received. The website had thousands of unique visitors and the accompanying TV show aired repeatedly on TV3, seen by thousands of Medfordites in October and November 2005. We're trying to decide how to do it again in 2007 for the Medford Mass municipal election.

2005 was good:  19 of 21 candidates for Medford City Council, School Committee, and Mayor responded to our citizen's questionnaire about their candidacies.  Interestingly, neither of the two non-responding candidates were elected. Our project filled a real vacuum in local politics.

While we figure out next steps, check out the archive from 2005:  2005.votemedford.org
